Quickish note from UMRG owners, Brett & Haley

On behalf of Upper Missouri River Guides, its constituents and the general tourism-based industry of our great state of Montana, thank you for choosing to spend a bit of your summer with us on the river. I truly hope this note finds you well, safe, sound and sane amidst an unprecedented time in our country. Life, as we knew it, came to a screeching halt, and I hope you are in a strong position to weather this storm, as I fear many people in our country are facing difficulties that are only getting worse.

First, an immeasurable “THANK YOU” to the frontline workers, healthcare professionals and essential services that are providing care, support and humanity to the rest of the country. A special thank you to the governor of Montana, his staff and all residents of our great state - thanks to the response and willingness to do what was needed, our state successfully flattened the curve, for now, and are riding the coattails of a much-needed, long-awaited deep breath.

It is without question our #1 priority to keep all of our travelers (and guides) safe and out of harm’s way at all times - this is our commitment without fail. We are trained to evaluate a wide range of ever-changing conditions from headwinds and high water flows to knee-deep mud and slithery beasts. Now, we are faced with navigating a brave new arena of uncertainty and calming fears while also considering potential travel impediments, general restrictions and the responsibility of doing our part to stop the spread of a deadly virus.

By the nature of our location and trip style, a multi-day adventure on the Upper Missouri River is probably the safest option. Our groups are small and crowds… well, don’t exist in the wilderness. Please keep in mind, outdoor recreation is our livelihood, one of the most important components of our great state’s economy, and the lifeblood of many rural communities. The ripple effect of fewer travelers can (and will) have a devastating impact on small communities and local businesses. We remain committed to making educated decisions and doing our part to take the precautions warranted to help mitigate these ramifications.

Despite the turmoil and uncertainty raged by an invisible terror: we look forward to a summer on the river more than anything else. After months and months corresponding with folks, our greatest joy is getting to know amazing people while on one of our most beloved rivers. We believe in the pure medicinal qualities of being outside, in nature and the wilderness, for long periods of time. A night under the stars works wonders.

Please reach out anytime. Thank you for your continued support.

~ Brett & Haley

Deposit, Final Payment & Cancellation policy

We require a $400 deposit per person to secure your spot. We require final payment 60 days prior to the trip departure. You can pay using cash, check, Venmo or credit card (all card charges are subject to a processing fee - 1.5% for deposits & 3% for final payments).

Due to the seasonal nature of our business, cancellations can prove very costly to us. However, we understand that things happen outside of our control. Refunds of monies will be given at the following rates:

  • Prior to 90 days before launch date, we will refund your deposit less 50%.

  • 60 days or less before launch date, no refunds will be given.

  • In certain circumstances, you can opt to hold credit with us for monies paid, and postpone your trip for the following summer. Contact us for details.**

**We are committed to being flexible - last minute decisions, changes, date modifications are all realities of our current situation, and we are prepared to welcome them all gracefully.

Our updated operations procedures

We will adhere to strict, updated guidelines in order to keep our customers, guides and shuttle drivers safe. We are thankful to take advantage of the naturally ‘distanced’ arrangement of being in the wilderness with lots of space to spread out. Keep in mind, the last thing anyone wants in the wilderness is to get sick - thus, we are seasoned professionals when it comes to sanitation.

These include but are not limited to:

  • Symptom screening regularly for guides. We will take additional steps if we determine a guide or guest is showing symptoms or poses a risk.

  • Masks while in shuttle vehicles - if requested by guests

  • Disinfecting of vehicles before and after each trip

  • Adequate hand washing stations for bathroom and kitchen area

  • Additional outlining of procedures during our safety briefing

Best practices we already follow:

  • Regular and thorough cleaning/disinfecting of all surfaces and faucets in camp

  • Careful and strict dish washing and sanitation

  • Hand sanitizer as a compliment to every meal, hand washing station as the center piece of the kitchen

  • Highest level of care when preparing food

  • Disinfecting of all gear post trip

Hope for all & a plea to fellow Montanans

Our HOPE is you stay safe, sane and perhaps get lots and lots of house projects done wilst remaining close to home. If we all do our part, HOPEfully our country will be back on some sort of track soon. In the mean time, try to get fresh air, exercise and stay connected to each other even if it is digitally. Most of all, if you are faced with the difficult but sensible decision to postpone your travel plans, we HOPE you set your sights on a future trip to Montana and the Upper Missouri River. We will be waiting in anticipation to provide everyone a much needed vacation in the river.

To my fellow Montanans:

We know funds are tight and the hours rife with uncertainty, BUT now is the time to explore your backyard and discover the innumerable and varied treasures of our great state.

I was born and raised in Paradise Valley along the Yellowstone River (Haley), but, honestly, I did not even know the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument existed until I met my darling, Brett, who had been guiding on the river for 13 years. On my first trip down the river, I was completely astounded. How can something so amazing exist, and I have no idea?! I might be slightly biased because as few years later, we purchased the business, and now the Upper Missouri River is inextricably linked to our lives. BUT, trust me when I say you will NOT be disappointed. Your Montana pride will swell like never before while on a trip down the Upper Missouri River immersed in the decidedly unique landscape, history, wildlife and remnants of recent lives lived along the banks.

The tourism industry needs your support. Local tourism businesses are virtually strangled - it’s up to us to keep this massive portion of our economy afloat. Consider supporting a local, tourism-based business in whatever way possible, in any amount.

We look forward to seeing you on the river. We sport beautiful, sleek, efficient tan Wenonah Kevlar canoes. Come say hi.

THANK YOU & BEST WISHES

~ Haley and all the guides, shuttle drivers and friends of Upper Missouri River Guides
